Medical Abortion

AKA "The Abortion Pill"

A medical abortion, sometimes called the abortion pill, is FDA-approved up to 10 weeks from the start of your last menstrual period.

It involves two medications: Mifeprex (to block progesterone) and Misoprostol (to cause the uterus to empty).

Cramping and bleeding are expected, and some women may need a follow-up procedure if the process is incomplete. Buying pills online can be unsafe since non-FDA-approved versions may not meet safety standards.

  • Cramping, bleeding, infection, damage to cervix or uterus (rare).

If you do take the first pill in the abortion pill protocol and change your mind, you may be able to reverse its effects. Call the Abortion Pill Reversal Hotline now: (877) 558-0333

6-16 Weeks

In Clinic Procedures

Vacuum aspiration, suction curettage, D&C.

In-clinic abortions during the first and early second trimester often involve suction aspiration.

The cervix is dilated, and suction is used to remove pregnancy tissue. Sometimes instruments called curettes or forceps are also used.

The procedure usually takes 10–30 minutes.

  • Cramping, bleeding, infection, damage to cervix or uterus (rare).

17-20 Weeks

Dilation & Evacuation (D&E)

Later abortions (after about 17 weeks) are typically performed with dilation and evacuation (D&E).

The cervix is softened with medication or dilators, and suction plus instruments are used to remove pregnancy tissue.

The procedure takes longer and may require more recovery time.

  • Heavy bleeding, retained tissue, infection, damage to uterus or cervix.

  • General Risks and Considerations

All abortion procedures carry risks. These may include heavy bleeding, infection, incomplete abortion, damage to the cervix or uterus, and emotional or psychological effects. Some women report feelings of sadness, guilt, or difficulty coping after an abortion. Support is available if you need to talk about these experiences.

  • Post-Abortion Emotional Health

Some women experience emotional struggles after abortion, sometimes described as post-abortion stress. Common reactions include guilt, anxiety, depression, difficulty sleeping, or relationship strain. While every woman’s response is different, you are not alone if you find yourself struggling.
